of Philosophy of the EHU

The Department offers programs in Philosophy and Cultural Studies.
It has provided instruction since 1992 with the emphasis on the history of philosophy and modern philosophical thought. Under the leadership of Professor A. Mikhailov, scholars from different countries in the fields of phenomenology and hermeneutics established a new scientific school as a real alternative to the “Marxist-Leninist tradition,” which has been cultivated in the Soviet universities and still implicitly dominates in most Belarusian educational establishments.

Strong emphasis is placed on German, which is augmented by the study of English, Latin and Greek. It adds to a special profile of the Department's curriculum. The EHU students are involved in the three research seminars in Phenomenology and Hermeneutics, Philosophical Anthropology and Critical Theory.

The Department of Philosophy offers international master's and doctoral degree programs in the following fields: Philosophy of Religion, Philosophical Anthropology, Philosophy of Culture, Social Philosophy, and Cultural Studies.

Since 1997 EHU students have been able to major in Cultural Studies.
The Cultural Studies curriculum offers fundamental theoretical training and provides a comprehensive review of history and theory of culture.
In 2000-2001, on the basis of the Departments of Philosophy and Art,
the interdisciplinary Visual Culture Studies Program was launched.

Under the auspices of the Visual Culture Studies Program students conduct interdisciplinary research on visual culture (films and TV, city and museum areas, modern and classical art, advertising, etc.) and on the ways of its conceptual interpretation. Special attention is placed on such approaches as Classical and Non-classical Psychoanalysis, Phenomenology, Semiotics, Feminist Criticism in Art Studies.
