The establishment of the Centre for Scandinavian Studies at EHU is part of
the university's strategy to develop area and regional studies in Belarus. The
Swedish Institute has provided initial support for the establishment of the Centre
and the University College of South Stockholm contributed to the Centre's first
academic programme.
On 1 March 2002 the ten-month certificate programme in Swedish Studies, operated
jointly with the University College of South Stockholm and supported by the Swedish
Institute, will be launched at the EHU. The Swedish Studies programme has two
components: the first one of subject courses on Sweden delivered by Swedish faculty,
and the second component of Swedish language training provided by Belarusian and
Swedish teachers.

The overall objective of the Centre for Scandinavian Studies at EHU is twofold.
First, the Centre is to provide venue for academic research, educational and cultural
activity in order to disseminate knowledge on Scandinavian nations, their history,
culture, and modern political, economic and social life within Belarusian society.
Second, it will stimulate interest in developing cooperation with Belarus among
various interest groups in Scandinavian countries.
The focus of the Centre's activity will be to educate Belarusian specialists
that would be motivated and informed facilitators in the development of mutually
beneficial and fruitful cooperation between Belarus and Scandinavian countries
in economic, academic, cultural and other areas of mutual interest.
